BizTech's Technology Commercialization service offers market assessments, product commercialization services and establishment of a new business to take the product to market. It will do this with a royalty and equity ownership stream coming back to the original owner. Customers of this service are Universities and aerospace companies whose strategic mission does not include commercial products, but whose work in other areas has produced intellectual property with commercial potential.

IntelCell is the result of the first commercialization project between the University of Alabama in Huntsville and BizTech. This project went through a three month market opportunity analysis, the favorable results of which caused UAH to fund further preliminary design work and market research with potential customers. The step-wise process that BizTech offers permits the owner of a technology to explore its commercial potential “a la carte”, without committing large sums of money or time up front.

Once a project is deemed to have commercial and profit potential, BizTech helps the technology owners form a company around the intellectual property and to recruit a management team to take the company forward as a BizTech client. Ownership of the new business is usually spread among the original owners/developers, the institution they are employed by, BizTech and the management team charged with making the entity a commercial success. The new company then becomes eligible for funding by members of the Huntsville Angel Network, which is administered by BizTech. Depending on capital requirements, the project may be fully funded locally, or may be syndicated with other angel groups around the country. Projects that progress to the point of needing capital in the $5 to $10 million range may be taken to venture capital firms.

Many locally-developed technologies with potential today remain just that: potential. The Tennessee Valley will benefit from BizTech’s Technology Commercialization service by leveraging money already being spent with talent and funds to move the concept into the marketplace more rapidly. This accelerated timeline will generate increased revenues and payrolls sooner, thereby creating a larger return for everyone.
